MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — Corey Fuller caught a 25-yard touchdown pass and Trevone Boykin threw to Josh Boyce for the 2-point conversion, lifting TCU to a 39-38 double overtime win over West Virginia (No. 21 BCS, No. 23 AP) on Saturday night.
TCU (6-3, 3-3 Big 12) got the victory after West Virginia (5-3, 2-3) went ahead on Geno Smith’s 25-yard TD pass to Stedman Bailey.
On TCU’s possession, Boykin handed off to B.J. Catalon and he pitched to Brandon Carter, who threw to Fuller in the end zone.
Boyce then caught the 2-point conversion, which was upheld after review.
TCU rallied from 10 points down to force overtime. Boykin and Boyce teamed up on a 96-yard TD pass play with 1:28 left to tie the score at 31-31
Neither team scored in the first overtime.
Team Notes
*TCU moved to 6-3 overall and 3-3 in the Big 12.
*TCU became bowl eligible with the win. The Horned Frogs will head to their 11th bowl game in Gary Patterson’s 12 seasons as head coach.
*TCU is now 3-1 on the road in Big 12 play this season.
*The Horned Frogs improved to 13-8 under Patterson against ranked teams.
*TCU played in overtime for the second time this season. It’s the first time since 2005, when the Horned Frogs defeated Utah and BYU in consecutive weeks, that TCU has played two overtime games in the same season.
*The Horned Frogs improved to 6-7 all-time in overtime games, including a 5-6 mark with Patterson as head coach.
*TCU held West Virginia to 338 yards of offense.
Individual Notes
*Tailback B.J. Catalon and safety Derrick Kindred became the fifth and sixth true freshmen to start for TCU this season.
*The Horned Frogs have had 20 players make their first career starts this season, tying for third nationally.
*Josh Boyce’s 94-yard touchdown catch with 1:28 remaining in the fourth quarter was the third-longest play in TCU history. Boyce also has the fourth-longest play with a 93-yard touchdown catch at Utah in 2010.
*The career-high 180 yards receiving by Boyce tied for the sixth-best single-game total in TCU history and were the most since Jimmy Young’s school record 226 yards versus Wyoming in 2008.
*Boyce’s 180 yards receiving have moved him into second place on TCU’s all-time list with 2,331 yards. He trails only Mike Renfro (2,739, 1974-77).
*Boyce had his second game-winning 2-point catch. He also caught a 2-point pass for the go-ahead points with 1:05 to play in last year’s 36-35 win at Boise State.
*Boyce’s 15-yard first-quarter reception extended his streak to 29 consecutive games with at least one catch. He has at least one reception in 34 of his 35 career games.
*Boyce’s 31-yard second-quarter touchdown catch extended his TCU career record to 21 scoring receptions.
*Brandon Carter’s first career pass was a 25-yard touchdown to Corey Fuller in the second overtime.
*Matthew Tucker’s 2-yard first-quarter scoring run was his 30th career rushing touchdown, moving him into sole possession of fourth place on TCU’s all-time list. Next on the chart is Tony Jeffery in third with 31 (1984-87)
*Defensive end Stansly Maponga returned to action for the first time since Oct. 13 at Baylor. He missed the last two games due to injury. On his first snap, Jason Verrett recorded an interception.
*Verrett recorded his team-best fifth interception, the most by a Horned Frog since Quincy Butler had five in 2005
*Verrett posted his first career kick block on a potential game-winning 36-yard West Virginia field-goal attempt in the first overtime.
*Kindred and Sam Carter both had a career-high and team-best 10 tackles.
*Dominic Merka’s first collegiate touch was a 15-yard touchdown return off a fumbled punt.
