By Chuck Cox Special Contributor If you stop by The Front Row on a regular basis, you know 1980s metal provided a good portion of the soundtrack of my youth. There are plenty of bands from that era, like Poison, Def Leppard and Motley Crue, that have seen live umpteen […]

By Chuck Cox Special Contributor There are certain bands we all latch onto when we’re in high school. As a member of the Class of 1987, most of mine from that era are of the hair metal variety. Pretty much any time any of these bands roll into town, I […]

L.A. Guns took the stage just before midnight and was playing with two of its four core members (singer Phil Lewis and drummer Steve Riley) from the band’s heyday, which included a pair of stellar early albums and a Top 40 hit in “The Ballad Of Jayne.”

Kip Winger, Reb Beach, Rod Morgenstein and John Roth got the last laugh. Twenty years later, Winger is still putting on amazing rock shows for passionate fans, while Beavis and Butt-Head have gone to cartoon heaven.

When the lights went down, Napoleon XIV’s “They’re Coming to Take Me Away” started blaring out of the speakers. And then … boom. I spent the next 30 minutes or so falling in love with a band I knew nothing about. It was one of those magical moments you always hope for when you go see live music.

Eisley Ends Tour With Bang at Trees

I’m not sure if it’s just a matter of the band maturing and becoming even more polished, but after seeing Eisley four previous times, I had never heard the quintet sound as big and impressive as it did on Friday night.

Yesterday and Today, a Rock and Roll Mystery

As Y&T churned out a 22-song set list packed primarily with big, loud rock and roll anthems that sounded like many songs that dominated the 1980s hair metal scene, it became harder and harder to understand how this band, which is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year, was not every bit as gigantic as bands like Poison, Def Leppard and Motley Crue.

Cat Power’s Trees Show an Absolute Trainwreck

In my many years of extensive concert going, I feel pretty confident saying Cat Power (a/k/a Chan Marshall) put on the absolute worst show I’ve ever seen. So much so that I left early.

By Chuck Cox Special Contributor I always enjoy getting to see two shows on consecutive nights. Granted, it’s not something I’d want to do all of the time, but when a couple of good ones come along that just happen to fall right next to one another, it can be […]

The 80’s Scottish Outfit Big Country Brings Back Big Memories at Trees By Chuck Cox Special Contributor Nostalgia shows are typically some of my favorites, but they can also be a little bit tricky. A couple of Sundays ago, I went to check out Bow Wow Wow and Gene Loves Jezebel at the Boiler Room, […]
