    By the end of the day when all the results were in, the Mustangs still earned the three seed. They tied for third place with Connecticut and Memphis at 12-6, but took the third seed by virtue of their 3-1 record in the head to head competition with the other two.

    The game was close throughout the first half with the teams tied at 29 at the break. However, SMU went on a 1-7 run to open up a double digit lead 46-36 just 3:18 into the second frame. “We got punched in the mouth at the start of the second half and we didn’t recover,” said Memphis coach Josh Pastner.

    SMU is second in the nation in field-goal percentage defense (1st American), holding opponents to 37.0 percent from the field. The Mustang defense is also holding opponents to 61.2 points per game, good for 19th in the NCAA (2nd American). SMU has held 22 of its last 30 (16 of 21 this year) opponents under 40% shooting. On the glass, the Mustangs have outrebounded 18 of 21 opponents this season.
