Renaming the Temple, SMU Basketball is the toughest ticket in town and DeMarcus Ware a salary cap casualty? Times they are a changin’

I know everyone appears to be up in arms over this whole Globe Life Park in Arlington thing. I think we’re approaching this the wrong way. I, for one, can’t wait to get my season ticket package with optional term life insurance policy in the mail. But seriously – someone has to pay Derek Holland’s salary. Let’s let the good folks from Globe Life do it.

Russell Wilson has been offered $20K and a vacation to make a one day appearance with the Myrtle Beach Pelicans

Russell Wilson has been offered $20K and a vacation to make a one day appearance with the Myrtle Beach Pelicans

The Myrtle Beach Pelicans are trying to lure Russell Wilson to come join the team for just one day. Their pitch? A $20,000 donation to the charity of Wilson’s choice and an all-inclusive vacation for Wilson and his wife. What’s next? Timeshare property? I’ve got one of those, Russell, Trust me – skip the presentation and go play some golf.

All this and the Pelicans don’t even expect Wilson to play. They just want him to talk with young players do a Q&A and sign autographs. How do I get that gig? I can do all of those things – talk, sign stuff and vacation.

Here’s a fun bit of trivia – name the only two Major League teams to win 90 games each of the last four seasons? Give up? The Tampa Bay Rays and the Texas Rangers. Combined World Series championships? Zero.

The Rangers have invited the unfortunately named Rougned Odor to Spring Training. What’s that smell? Yeah, I know, how many times has he heard that?

Oh, and the Rangers have signed pitcher Daniel Bard. No ties to Shakespeare that I know of.

The Dallas Cowboys are interested in Mike Kafka. Given that Kafka has 16 career NFL passing attempts, does anyone have a clue what a Kafka-esque performance would look like? More importantly, why are the Cowboys interested in a quarterback with 16 passing attempts in three NFL seasons?

Demarcus Ware Dallas Cowboys

Cutting DeMarcus Ware would save some money but has that time come for the Dallas Cowboys?

A former colleague of mine at Scout.com, Doug Farrar, now at SI.com, predicts that DeMarcus Ware will be a salary cap casualty for the Cowboys. I’m not buying that just yet. Sure, there is some savings there. But cutting Ware means the Cowboys would have to completely start over on the defensive line. But that doesn’t concern me as much as Ware not scheduling surgery on his right shoulder for the second straight year.

Troy Aikman criticizes the Cowboys for their “lack of direction.” He says it’s hard to see the Cowboys improving with all of the staff and scheme changes. Aikman said that Seattle general manager John Schneider knows exactly what he wants at every position on the field. I’d be interested to hear Jerry Jones’ answer to what he wants at, say, defensive tackle? Anyone ever heard that? Exactly.

SMU Mustangs Basketball

How hot are SMU men’s basketball tickets right now? I checked StubHub on Friday night in advance of Saturday’s game with Cincinnati and the cheapest ticket I could find was $145. For a regular-season basketball game at SMU? Man, the times are changing on the Hilltop.

If you want to hit the Louisville game on March 5, get your tickets now. The cheapest is $60. That’s bound to go up.

Hit the Mavs game on Monday night with Cleveland and did my first Mark Cuban stairclimber interview. This guy doesn’t slow down for anything, does he?

By the way, the Texas Longhorns are playing some great basketball right now. Four straight wins over Top 25 teams? Looks like the Longhorns are well on their way to ending their one-year NCAA Tournament drought. Good thing for Rick Barnes, given the climate around Texas after the departure of Mack Brown.
