By Kendall Webb/College Football America publisher

Johnny ManzielThe College Football America Dream Team is our version of a major college All-America team with a twist. Instead of picking a first team, second team and/or third team, we decided to present the team in context of an actual Football Bowl Subdivision program.

FBS teams are limited to 85 scholarships so, as publisher, I assumed the role of head coach and selected 85 players I thought would represent the best team in college football. Our starting lineup features 26 players —  11 offensive, 11 defensive, a kicker, a punter, a punt returner and a kickoff returner. The Starting Line-up is the equivalent of a First-Team All-America team.

Then I selected the Second String – 11 offensive backups and 11 defensive backups – for a total of 22. Most college programs don’t carry more than one scholarship player at each specialist position so these 22 players are the equivalent of our Second-Team All-America team.

Next, I thought about how the remaining positions would be split up on a real FBS program. A good number of those would be an incoming freshman class. I saved 26 spots for those freshmen, even though that meant bending the rules slightly to have four more specialists on scholarship. This allowed me to honor the top incoming freshmen at each position, so these 26 newcomers are the College Football America Class of 2013.

That left 11 spots for the Reserves – the bench players of our Dream Team. It’s not enough for a full Third-Team All-America squad. But it is a realistic reflection of the numbers a FBS coach would have on his team in terms of upperclassmen. These players are the equivalent of a Third-Team All-America team.

No team is complete, however, without “walk-ons” and every FBS program has them. My associate publishers Matthew Postins and Chuck Cox selected the CFA Walk-Ons, the equivalent of an All-American Honorable Mention squad.

Our final squad is intended to honor the best players in college football, and as such, it includes 34 seniors. No FBS program would likely have that many seniors on scholarship, but the total number of upperclassmen is somewhere in the ballpark of what some programs would have on hand. The 20 juniors on our squad is realistic, but the five sophomores would be more evenly distributed with the seniors. Those 59 upperclassmen are joined by the 26 players from the CFA Class of 2013 to get us to our full allotment of 85 scholarships.
