Dallas Cowboys 2014 Free Agency Needs
The Cowboys are pretty well set for 2014 at Special Teams
By Matthew Postins
RattleandHumSports.com is breaking down the free agent needs at every position group for the 2014 Dallas Cowboys. Today it’s special teams.
Placekicker: Dan Bailey; Punter: Chris Jones
Top returner: Dwayne Harris. Other returners: Terrance Williams, Cole Beasley, Lance Dunbar.
Other notable players: L.P. Ladouceur (long-snapper)
Cowboys special teams players entering free agency: Bailey (restricted, signed a contract extension through 2020 on Jan. 23).
Free agency need?: 0 (out of 10, 10 being most pressing).
Why? The Cowboys took some of the drama out of free agency by signing Bailey to a long-term contract extension through 2020. The financial terms aren’t quite known yet, but the accepted yearly figure floating around is $3 million. The Cowboys weren’t likely to lose Bailey anyway, given he was a restricted free agent. But the contract assures the Cowboys that Bailey, their steadiest kicker since probably Chris Boniol or Richie Cunningham, can’t go anywhere for a long time. Chris Jones and L.P. Ladouceur are under contract. As for the return game, all the Cowboys need is for Dwayne Harris to get and stay healthy. But if he can’t, they have a bevy of options that can fill in for him.
Possible targets: Given what the Cowboys have under contract, the only way they would sign a free agent here is if they need players to fill practice reps or one of these players ends up injured. Expect the Cowboys to sign an extra long snapper and an extra punter around the time offseason workouts begin, but don’t expect them to challenge the incumbents.
Looking ahead: This is one of the few position groups where the Cowboys should feel secure.
