That surprise must have turned to dismay when news broke on Tuesday that Fields was separated from the Horned Frogs while Fort Worth police investigate Fields’ potential involvement in a domestic disturbance last weekend involving his ex-girlfriend.
Yahoo! Sports first reported the news. The Fort Worth Star-Telegram reported Fields’ separation from the team.
Fort Worth Police are conducting the investigation and will not release more information until it is complete.
“Devonte Fields has been separated from the University pending results of an investigation into the allegations against him,” a school statement read. “The University does not tolerate harassment or misconduct by a student. The university discipline process will be implemented which may result in disciplinary action from the University above and beyond any legal consequences the student might face.”
Fields allegedly threatened his ex-girlfriend with a gun and punched her, according to published reports based on the Fort Worth police report.
Fields was an All-Big 12 selection as a freshman in 2012, but played two games last season due to a one-game suspension and a season-ending injury.
Patterson spoke to the media after the incident, but before the news broke.
“I was kind of surprised Devonte Fields was preseason because he hadn’t played a year ago,” Patterson said. “We’ve got some guys that I think are as good as he is up front.”
